Bright Future For Street Lights

Bass Coast Shire Council has received a Federal Government grant of over $290,000 to start replacing old, inefficient street lights with modern, energy efficient, low cost lights.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman, welcomed the news, noting power bills for street lighting represents a significant part of Council’s annual budget.

"It costs Council over $200,000 a year to pay for the electricity used by our street lights," said Cr Dowman. "Replacing street lights with modern, energy efficient lights will save us between $70,000 and $100,000 per year.

"We plan to complete a full replacement program of all of the old standard lights on local roads over the next three years.

"This grant will cover about 30 per cent of the total project cost. The significant amount of money saved through this project means that it will pay for itself in under nine years," continued Cr Dowman.

Upgrading the bulk of local street lighting with new technology will also improve the quality of lighting.

"This means there will be greater uniformity of light across and along the street," said Cr Dowman.

"The lighting will be a better colour; there will be higher visibility and lower glare."

Bass Coast Shire Council is one of 63 grant recipients from around Australia under the first round of the Federal Government’s Community Energy Efficiency Program (CEEP).

In announcing the grants, Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Mark Dreyfus said the CEEP grants will help organisations overcome barriers in adopting energy efficient measures, such as replacing outdated technologies with new, smarter and cleaner ones.

"Councils will reduce their operating costs, while lowering greenhouse gas emissions – it’s a win-win for the regions," Mr Dreyfus said.

The replacement program will reduce Bass Coast Shire Council’s carbon emissions from street lighting by about 700 tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year, which is as good as taking 150 cars off the road.
