Council asks on display
Banners hanging on the sides of Latrobe City Council’s service centre building in Morwell are a visual reminder of Council’s commitment to work with the community to secure a just transition for Latrobe City.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said Council was so committed to the vision created by the community in the 'Strength Led Transition' document that it wanted to wear it proudly."These banners are about reminding our community that we are there for them, that we are guided by their words, their ideas and their vision for a just and respectful transition," Cr O’Callaghan said.
"While the Strength Led Transition is filled with many bold, innovative and inspiring elements, Council has harnessed four items as the key elements for its advocacy and lobbying work.
"We are calling for improvements to our rail line, to keep our power generation in the Valley, to relocate a government department here and to expand our health services. All these requests are achievable and we will continue our demands for a just and community-led transition through the closure of Hazelwood," Cr O’Callaghan said.
"We are hearing today that the Federal Government is taking another look at the possibility of funding research into carbon capture and storage technology. The Latrobe Valley is the perfect place to establish this kind of coal-fired power generation. Securing the energy future of the state right here in Latrobe City is one of our demands.
"We’ll watch this discussion with interest and hope," Cr O’Callaghan said..
