Public meeting to finalise Yarram Railway Reserve Concept Plan

Wellington Shire Council has organised a public meeting for Thursday 10 March to discuss and finalise the concept plan for Yarram Railway Reserve with the local community.

By Wellington Shire Council - 3rd March 2005 - Back to News

This masterplan, which was previously on display in the Yarram Service Centre for seven weeks for community feedback, contains a number of proposals on suggested enhancements to the reserve site.

The meeting will run from 7pm to 9pm in the Pelican Room in the shire’s Yarram Service Centre in Grant Street. It will provide an ideal opportunity to view and discuss the proposals and make any additional suggestions.

All comments will be carefully considered by the council before it makes a final decision on improvements to the reserve.

The council has $15,000 available in this year’s capital budget to get the project under way. It looks forward to working closely with the local community to secure additional funding to cover various elements of the initiative in subsequent years, as it implements the reserve plan.

Proposals include:

  • constructing a shared pedestrian/cycle trail along the reserve;
  • significant planting of indigenous trees and shrubs;
  • the addition of seating at regular intervals;
  • site options for a possible future skate park facility;
  • directional signage and signed timber entries at each road intersection.

The project is in line with the council’s Municipal Strategic Statement and Open Space Strategy – highlighting its commitment to maintain, enhance and expand open space facilities across Wellington. Indeed, in Yarram and district alone the council has spent $250,000 on open space improvements, including to parks and toilets, over the last four years. That does not include the $63,000 allocated this financial year – including $38,000 for a new picnic shelter at Port Albert, $5,000 for streetscape improvements to Yarram’s Commercial Road and the $15,000 for the Yarram Railway reserve.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "We are pleased to support this community-driven initiative and are keen to get it under way as speedily as possible. Enhancing the Yarram Railway Reserve is a significant initiative for the town and needs to take account of the needs of the local community as whole. With this in mind we would encourage everyone to attend the coming public meeting."
