Communities Talk Buses

Three Bass Coast communities are joining forces to establish a sub-committee to investigate their public transport needs.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 20th August 2009 - Back to News

Supported by Bass Coast Transport Connections, the initiative follows the introduction of 134 new weekly bus services in Bass Coast as part of the State Government’s $14 million transport package.

Bass Coast Transport Connections facilitator, Tracy VanderZalm, said residents in Corinella, Coronet Bay and Tenby Point recognised the new services made travel easier for some, but felt they may not meet the needs of these isolated communities.

"People living within these towns have lost a direct service, and this may have quite an impact on some residents." Mrs VanderZalm said.

"Before these new services were implemented, people living in Corinella, Coronet Bay and Tenby Point could catch a bus from their local stop direct to Melbourne.

"That service has been replaced with a connector bus which feeds commuters to Grantville, where they can then catch a bus to Koo Wee Rup and then onto Melbourne.

"The role of this sub-committee will be to gather community feedback and recommend improvements that reflect the community’s needs."

Some of the issues that have already been raised are:

  • the cost of a bus ticket to Grantville
  • to leave townships earlier in the day
  • to return to townships later in the day
  • the need to integrate both the V/Line and VicLink timetables
  • the location of bus stops

The Department of Transport (DoT) is encouraging feedback on the new services.

Mrs VanderZalm said a well represented sub-committee was one way of trying to strategically make a difference.

"Otherwise, people can contact the DoT directly or V/Line," she said.

"Bass Coast Transport Connections does not control the public transport system; however we can support communities to lobby for change."

Mrs VanderZalm said the State Government was implementing Stage 2 of its transport package in October this year.

"It’s important for communities to submit their feedback on Stage 1 of the project before Stage 2 is implemented," Mrs VanderZalm said.

"Community members in Corinella, Coronet Bay and Tenby Point can contact their local residents and ratepayers association to get information to the sub-committee. Ideally they should do this in August.

"That way, the DoT has time to investigate the feedback and your suggestions have a better chance of being addressed in the second stage."
