Kia International tennis tournament in full swingThe first round of both the men’s and women’s Kia International Tennis competition at the Traralgon Tennis Association began on Tuesday 3 October, heralding several days of top flight international tennis right here in Latrobe City. By Latrobe City Council - 4th October 2006 - Back to News Competition begins at 10am everyday this week including Saturday, and the men’s and women’s singles finals will be contested on Sunday from 11am. The men’s doubles final will be played on Friday afternoon and the women’s doubles final will be played on Friday night at 6pm.
Players to watch out for in the men’s draw include top seeded Australians Allan Jones from Canberra and Luke Bourgeois from Sydney. They will be facing players from all over Australia as well as players from China, New Zealand, Great Britain, Japan and Hong Kong. On the women’s side, two Australians are top seeds: Australian Federation Cup members Casey Dellaequa and Sophie Ferguson, with stiff competition from players from Sweden, Argentina and the USA.
Local sponsors of the event include Latrobe City, State Government of Victoria, Win TV, 3TR FM, Latrobe Valley Express, Coates Hire, Quality Inn Latrobe Convention Centre, Turnbull Kia.
Latrobe City mayor, councillor Lisa Price, said that it was great to see such top class sporting events being held in the municipality.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to welcome visitors from all over the world to our community. Players, coaches and their entourages are coming to Traralgon to take part in this international event.
"I would encourage anyone who is able to attend the event to do so. There are some matches scheduled for evenings after work and at the weekends, and entry is free. It’s a great chance to enjoy the spectacle of top class tennis at a local venue," Cr Price said.
The Traralgon Tennis Association is located on the corner of Franklin and Davidson Streets, Traralgon. Entry is free, for every session of every day.
