Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the region’s peak tourism body Destination Gippsland will receive a total of $45,000 through the Government’s Tourism Victoria Events Program to assist with tourism marketing for the 2012 Gippsland Inspired series.

"Whether it’s the region’s aromatic wine and produce or the vibrant local music and arts scene, Gippsland’s strong sense of local character and community continues to provide a high quality regional tourism experience," Mr Northe said.

Mr Northe said the events could not only significantly increase visitation and create jobs, but also contribute to the area’s enviable lifestyle.

"The impressive event line-up for Gippsland was a sign the region was back on track as a result of strong support from the Coalition Government following flooding earlier this year.

"Community events being supported through the Government's Events Program such as the popular folk and drums festival in Boolarra will again showcase Gippsland's stunning natural beauty, a major drawcard for the area and one of the reason's the region continues to attract international visitors," Mr Northe said.

"The Boolarra Folk Festival is an award winning annual festival held in the fresh green surrounds of the central park in Boolarra. Combining music, arts, crafts and free family fun, the festival attracts 5,000 people each year, and is a fantastic drawcard for our region.

"The Boolarra Folk Festival organising committee are very dedicated and enthusiastic and I am very pleased that a portion of this funding will be used to provide the group with extra marketing support, which will hopefully draw more visitors to the idyllic town."

The funding will be used to promote tourism packages to Melburnians and interstate visitors so that the Gippsland Inspired series can attract more overnight visitors.

"The Coalition Government is committed to supporting regional events to help boost the profile of Victoria’s vibrant tourism industry and I commend the organising committees for the fantastic work that they do," Mr Northe said.

The next Boolarra Folk Festival will be held on Saturday 3 March 2012. For further information visit: www.boolarrafolkfestival.com
