Baw Baw Shire Council is embarking on a new stormwater drainage strategy for Longwarry to better understand the town's existing and future drainage related challenges. The Longwarry Drainage Strategy will help to plan for the future of the town, by ensuring appropriate drainage for growth areas, while also proposing options to address issues in the existing urban areas.

Community engagement

Council is seeking input from residents and business owners to provide their local knowledge around drainage issues and opportunities in the town, to assist in the development of the strategy. An online feedback opportunity is now live at Longwarry Stormwater Drainage Strategy website.

Drop-in sessions

Two drop-in sessions will be held where locals can come and chat to council's Strategic Planners and project Consultants, Alluvium, about the strategy:

  • Longwarry Public Hall
  • Tuesday 19 March
  • Running between 2-4pm and 5-7pm, respectively

The current project is focussed on achieving the best outcomes for stormwater management, as well as community and environmental benefits. These outcomes include:

  • Reducing flood risks
  • Ensuring waterway health is protected
  • Providing community spaces that are accessible
  • Healthy landscapes and open spaces for community enjoyment

The Longwarry Drainage Strategy will be open for consultation until Wednesday 10 April, visit Longwarry Stormwater Drainage Strategy website to have your say, your way!

Longwarry drainage study

Baw Baw Shire Mayor Cr Annemarie McCabe said that council is aware of some of the historical drainage issues in Longwarry and said this is the perfect opportunity for people to share their experiences and help council to determine the best way to manage these in the future.

"The focus of this study and the new strategy is to develop a better means to strategically plan for and manage stormwater safely and effectively, from flood management to wetlands and waterway protection, stormwater harvesting and reuse for green cooling. We're leaving no stone unturned here and the aim at the finalisation of this study is that we've identified ways to further improve the liveability of Longwarry," Cr McCabe said.
