Healing, Magical And Restful Place Features At GalleryFor three months three Gunnai/Kurnai women artists from Gippsland, Eileen Harrison, Frances Harrison and Jenny Mullett collaborated with internationally renowned projection artist Ian de Gruchy to create a slide projection installation. By Latrobe City Council - 5th February 2010 - Back to News Latrobe City’s arts director, Julie Adams, said ‘Tandeera’ is a Gunnai/Kurnai word meaning ‘place of rest’, and together the artists have meditated on the themes of resting and healing post-Apology, to create an exhibition space that promises to soothe the soul.
"Drawing on the women’s cultural knowledge and family art traditions, as well as Ian de Gruchy’s innovative and inspiring projection techniques; the installation projects a unique and womanly space that is healing, magical and restful," Ms Adams said.
Artist Jenny Mullett said Tandeera is an experience much different to just looking at something on the wall in front of you.
"Tandeera is a place of contemplation and peace and pause."
Ian de Gruchy said that pre-digital technologies using orthographic film and programmed slide projectors were used to create the installation for Tandeera.
"Translating the artists’ work onto the dark painted walls of the gallery, transforms the space into a constantly changing immersive projection that is deep and mysterious," Mr de Gruchy said.
The exhibition was developed with the support of the Koorie Heritage Trust and the City of Melbourne.
‘Tandeera – Resting Place’ continues at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until 14 March.
Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. Entry is free.
