Holiday water use up only 6%: latest data

THE peak January period saw only an extra 6% call on the water available from Candowie Reservoir.

The extra consumption during the holiday period – from January 4 to February 21 – was 115ML.

Total water use – including the holiday extra – peaked for one week at just over 70ML/week and rapidly dropped back to normal levels, typically around 35ML/week.

Westernport Water Managing Director David Mawer said: "Our modelling predicted this level of extra demand over the summer period.

"It validates our decision to remain at Stage Two throughout the period. The Candowie reserves remained close to 75% full and even by the end of February were still at 58%."

He thanked the customers of Westernport Water for their ongoing restrained water use. "With much more water in storage going into this summer, we are very pleased to be able to avoid the tough restrictions of the preceding summer, at Stage Four," he said.

"The way our customers observed Stage Two limitations is a credit to our community. We extend our thanks and will continue working towards securing supply with augmentation from the Bass River and the Corinella aquifer."

Mr Mawer noted that Westernport Water had achieved "a reassuring level of supply" by only drawing 3% of allocated high-water flows from the Bass River in winter.

"Further augmentation of water supplies using the Corinella aquifer makes our water supply much stronger," he said.
