Gallery Holiday Workshops Inspire Young CreativityThere was plenty of creative action at the Latrobe Regional Gallery during the recent school holiday program. By Latrobe City - 8th February 2012 - Back to News Latrobe City’s arts director, Julie Adams, said that children were inspired to make their own artwork by visiting two exhibitions that are currently on display at the gallery.
"The children saw Celestial Earth, works from the Cbus Collection of Australian Art which features bark and canvas paintings by Indigenous artists; and Zhongjian: Midway, a touring exhibition which features contemporary Chinese and Australian artists.
"By the end of the day, they had made wall hangings that represented their own Australian totems and a dragon puppet in celebration of Chinese New Year," Ms Adams explained.
"It is always exciting to have children in the gallery looking at the work on exhibition and being creative themselves. Providing opportunities for our young people to have visual arts experiences is a very important aspect of the gallery’s activities. It is well documented that children who participate in arts activities develop and strengthen their learning in other areas such as literacy and social skills. Sharing these experiences and having some fun is also good for the general health and wellbeing of our kids," Ms Adams concluded.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery offers programs for children throughout the year and has a special exhibition space for children: ‘the Lane’. For more information contact 5128 5700 or visit www.latroberegionalgallery.com
