Mayor warns over lies

Wellington Shire Council Mayor, Cr Malcolm Hole, has warned residents to be wary of people spreading malicious and unfounded rumours about Council services and charges.

By Wellington Shire Council - 24th October 2006 - Back to News

"Councillors have been approached by residents who had been told that Council will introduce a $500 septic tank levy on households.

"This is simply untrue," said Cr Hole.

"Residents are getting needlessly worried and concerned by these stories.

"It is a particularly cruel act to tell these stories to older residents who become very concerned."

Cr Hole said he did not know why anyone would want to spread these lies, but suspected that it may be a deliberate effort by some to further their own agenda. It is possible that some people are spreading stories to scare people into false concern over Council rates and charges.

"I can’t understand why anyone would spread misinformation that can only upset people," he said.

Those spreading the false rumours seem to be targeting people who have no objections to Council rates.

It is believed the rumours were started after Council received a report on a Draft Domestic Wastewater Management Plan. The state government has required all local councils to prepare similar plans. The plans are likely to impose massive inspection and monitoring obligations on the Council.

"This is a draft plan, Council has not adopted it at this stage and certainly we have not made any decision to charge residents a levy," said Cr Hole.

"Residents can rest assured that Councillors would find any suggestion of a $500 annual levy completely unacceptable."

Council is concerned that this rumour campaign is only the latest in a series of misinformation incidents. Recent claims to have reached the media have included that Council has the second highest rates in the state, that the Council rate was 39 cents in the dollar and that a $900,000 residential property in Frankston paid only $500 in rates.

"All of these statements are untrue," said Cr Hole.

"They are so far wide of the mark as to be ridiculous."

Cr Hole urged residents to be wary of any information they are told about Council by people who might a have a barrow to push.

"Ask them to show you their evidence in writing," said Cr Hole.

Cr Hole said residents were always welcome to ring the Council or Councillors to clarify any issues of concern.
