Churchill Pool Closed As Roof Works Begin

The pool at Latrobe Leisure Churchill is currently closed and will remain closed for four weeks until a new roof and ceiling have been installed. Works are scheduled for completion by Sunday 22 April.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that whilst the pool was always scheduled for closure for these works, the discovery of fibreglass insulation in the roof cavity meant that the pool closed a week earlier than expected.

"The roof contractors were employed to begin work on the roof prior to the ceiling contractors but they discovered the cavity between the existing ceiling and roof contains old fibreglass insulation batts that have deteriorated to the point where fibres could have been dislodged and entered the pool.

"Public safety is our paramount concern so we took the decision to close the pool earlier than planned in order to ensure that the water was not contaminated," Cr Vermeulen said.

Ward Councillor, Darrell White, appealed for pool patrons to be patient during the renovation works.

"It is necessary for the pool to remain closed during the upgrade but once completed the roof will be a great new feature for the centre. A few weeks of work will be well worth the end result.

"Latrobe Leisure pools in Morwell and Moe Newborough will of course be open as usual so those who want to swim can still do so at these centres and I would remind other users of Latrobe Leisure Churchill that the gymnasium, courts and fitness class timetable will operate as normal during the pool closure," Cr White concluded.
