More Rhyll Boat Ramp Works In February

Bass Coast Shire Council has advised that more works will be undertaken on the Rhyll Boat Ramp in February to rectify a problem with the end of the new lane.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 17th November 2006 - Back to News

A third lane at the boat ramp was constructed in August by Council contractor, Australian Project Solutions. During a recent low tide it was identified that the end of the new ramp is approximately 30cm higher than the adjoining existing lanes.

This can cause users difficulty during extreme low tides, which occur over several hours each month.

Council’s Infrastructure Director, Guy Wilson-Browne, says the contractor constructed the last 7.2 metres of the ramp at a grade in accordance with the Australian Standard, however, the existing ramp is steeper than this standard.

"A key part of the contract specification was for the new ramp to match the existing two lanes.

"Council has been urgently negotiating with the Contractor to have the rectification works completed in November," said Mr Wilson-Browne.

"However, unfortunately the contractor has been unable to secure the necessary resources and equipment until February.

"Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by this. We will keep the community informed on the process of the work on the boat ramp.

"As the difference in the ramp grading is only an issue during extreme low tides, we anticipate that the majority of users will not be affected."

The new lane was funded with an $80,000 contribution from Marine Safety Victoria and $100,000 from Council.
