Workshops To Study Coastal Towns Design Framework

The opportunity to contribute to the future of Mallacoota and Metung will be offered to members of each township’s community through two Urban Design Framework Workshops to be held over the period 11-13 June.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 10th May 2005 - Back to News

Open to the public, the workshops will focus on each town as a unique place, what the community and visitors to the town in 2020 will need and want as well as designing the layout, services and facilities for the future.

East Gippsland Shire Council’s Manager Development Nick Kearns said invitations would be extended to interested people who register expressions of interest and council will advertise for these shortly.

Mr Kearns said the workshops would progress a vision for each town, a vision statement, strategies to achieve understanding as well as the views and values of residents and visitors.

"They will also cover projects concepts and sketch designs, ideas for testing and exploring opportunities for the town, the social, economic and environment, issues, as well as a town plan including the physical infrastructure," he said.

The workshops are an integral part of the recently initiated Coastal Urban Design Framework project that is aimed at providing guidance on the location, type and extent of future development along the coast of the East Gippsland and Wellington Shires, with particular emphasis on sixteen specific settlements.

Hosted by the both councils in association with the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Gippsland Coastal Board, they will be conducted by the consortium of leading consultants retained to prepare a Coastal Urban Design Framework for 16 towns within the Shires.

The companies are Meinhardt Infrastructure and Environment Pty Ltd, Urban Initiatives and Urban Futures Consulting.

The project plan for the sixteen Coastal Towns Urban Design Frameworks includes a workshop to be conducted in major towns including Mallacoota and Metung.

Nick Kearns said that a first round of meetings held in these three towns during the peak January holiday period generated a high level of interest and involvement.

"Each community and visitors to the towns responded with ideas and views on how to develop the frameworks and potential projects.

"These meetings, together with submissions to the project also unlocked the local skills and knowledge that people are keen to contribute towards the future planning of the towns."

The June workshops will be conducted in three sessions with the first for general attendance titled an Ideas Lead Future, dealing with setting the design challenge.

Session Two, Design Challenge, will involve 40-50 local people with design skills and experience working in small teams to progress ideas to project concepts.

The final session, also for general attendance and called "Look at our town 2020" will involve joint community/consultant team presentations and review outcomes.

The project team and Council officers will organise the design challenge teams from the registrations received and group Leaders will be nominated to lead them.

Four members of the Consultant team will also provide design and planning resources to support the work of the teams.

The workshops are scheduled for Mallacoota June 10-11 and Metung June 12 -13.
