Helping your Kids to Learn

Everyday interactions with your children can be the most effective way of helping them to learn.

Everyday interactions with your children can be the most effective way of helping them to learn. "Children are naturally inquisitive and enjoy the opportunity to participate in your daily activities. Often as parents we don’t realise that these interactions are great learning opportunities for our young children," says Kellie O'Callaghan, Coordinator of Good Beginnings Latrobe.

Involving children in conversations, reading stories, telling jokes or singing songs are all great ways of increasing your child’s literacy skills. Talk about what they are doing, what they are playing with and join in and encourage children in pretend play activities.

Children will mimic what you do. Let your child catch you reading the newspaper, a book or magazine. Encourage them to join in and bring along a book they would like to share. Make access to books in your home easy for young children. This is important for children of all ages. Even babies can enjoy board books or chewable bath time books. This all leads to a relaxed introduction to reading for your child.

Children of all ages enjoy drawing. Keep scrap paper handy in your home. Have some pencils for your child to use to scribble. Encourage your child by keeping the pictures or scribbles they have drawn and placing them around your home for your family and friends to admire.

Playing with your children is great fun, very relaxing and is the best way for your child to develop confidence in learning new skills.
