Latrobe Local News:
Solar system on Council corporate headquarters building now connected

Savings of almost $10,000 per year are expected now that Latrobe City Council’s 30kW solar system has been connected to the electricity grid.

The 112 panel system has been in place since late last year awaiting connection, and will provide more than 6% of the building’s electricity use.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the system would pay for itself within four years.

"The installation of three grid connected 30 kW photovoltaic systems, one at Morwell Leisure Centre, one at Moe Place and one at the Morwell headquarters, cost $114,500 but the payback on all three systems makes financial sense. We were also able to engage local businesses – Gippsland Solar and Traralgon Plumbers – for the installation works which helps to keep jobs in Latrobe City.

"Savings of 50 tonnes of CO 2 emissions a year align with Council’s Natural Environment Sustainability Strategy. One of the objectives of our Natural Environment Sustainability Strategy is to work towards an overall reduction in Latrobe City corporate energy consumption and to improve energy efficiency.

"As electricity prices increase the financial benefits of having solar power capacity also increase. Buildings that can use most of the solar power produced on site provide the most cost effective opportunities for photovoltaics," Cr O’Callaghan said.

These three systems are the latest addition to Latrobe City’s growing supply of rooftop solar, which began with Churchill Hub in 2009, was followed by Traralgon South, Boolarra, Jeeralang North and Callignee community halls in 2012, and the recent club installation at Traralgon Tennis Pavilion

"This project has both environmental and fiscal advantages as well as demonstrating to the community in a physical way that we are supporting new technologies which generate cost-savings and align with our sustainable practices," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
