Saltwater Creek looking for support

Bass Coast Shire Council invites community members to join the Saltwater Creek Friends Group to look for support.

By news@gippsland - 16th May 2016 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council is inviting community members to join the Saltwater Creek Friends Group, with a meeting to attract members to the Group being held on Saturday, 28 May.

Council decided at the February meeting to form a Friends Group for Saltwater Creek Reserve following community consultation in regards to establishing a path through the area.

McHaffie Ward Councillor, Kimberley Brown, said Saltwater Creek has an interesting history, having been saved from development by the local community.

"We have successfully formed similar groups for Scenic Estate Conservation Reserve and Smiths Beach, with a good turnout of interested community members," Cr Brown said.

"We’d love to continue this success with a passionate group of community members to help us look after Saltwater Creek."

If you are interested in attending the initial meeting, please meet at the end of Heyley Avenue, Ventnor, at 10.00am where discussions can begin.

The group will then walk into the Reserve and information will be provided about the extent of the Reserve, as well as past, present and possible future works.

Community members of other existing volunteer groups within the Saltwater Creek area are very welcome to join and share their knowledge and experience.

The new Friends Group will help Council to manage the Reserve and be called upon to help set the annual works program and funded priority actions from the Saltwater Creek Pathway Consultation Report – October 2015.

Works may include on-ground conservation and minor infrastructure works. A Friends Group could also undertake activities such as tree planting, weeds management and seed collecting, and will determine its own meeting and working bee schedule as required.

For more information, please contact Council’s Environment Team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211.
