The best TAFE courses for getting a job in Gippsland are in Health and Community Services, Building and Construction and Retail

A national survey of TAFE graduates has found that the best TAFE courses for getting a job in Gippsland are in Health and Community Services, Building and Construction and Retail.

The survey conducted by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), found many GippsTAFE graduates were now working in hospitals, nursing homes, childcare centre, aged accommodation, the building industry, supermarkets, clothing stores, cake shops, florists and car dealerships.

The most popular occupations were business administration, customer service, word processing, banking, human resources, sales, toolmaking, electrical, bricklaying, plumbing and Gasfitting, plastering, printing, panel beating, bakeries, cooking, gardening, hairdressing, engineering, teaching, social work, accounting, photography and libraries.

An extremely large number of graduates were employed in the electricity, gas and water, supply industries, reflecting the Institutes specialisation in the utilities market through the Latrobe Valley power industry, and ETTA Training in Melbourne.

Retail was also a big category, reflecting GippsTAFE’s major contact with Big W in Victoria for retail traineeships.

GippsTAFE scored very highly when it came to preparing students for jobs or further study.

The 2002 survey found 88% of GippsTAFE students were either employed or undertaking further study after finishing their course.

The survey also found that the starting salary for GippsTAFE graduates was more than $32,000 a year, well ahead of some University courses.

GippsTAFE scored higher than the Victorian average in the Instructors knowledge of subject content, instructor’s ability, the balance between instruction and practice, assessment methods and the presentation of training material.

GippsTAFE’s best results came when students were asked if their field study was similar to the course they were studying and their current job, giving the Institute an 8 out 0f 10 for quality of training.
