A Fun Day for Everyone at the Wonthaggi Big PlantWonthaggi residents, local traders, school and community groups, Landcare and conservation groups will band togetherand plant more than 6,000 indigenous trees and shrubs By Bass Coast Shire Council - 16th July 2001 - Back to News Wonthaggi residents, local traders, school and community groups, Landcare and conservation groups will band together on Sunday 5 August and plant more than 6,000 indigenous trees and shrubs in the second annual Wonthaggi Big Plant at Baxters Wetland.
"This year’s Big Plant will build on last year’s successful community cooperative planting effort and is a demonstration of local pride of Wonthaggi," said Geoff Trease, Landcare officer with Bass Coast Shire Council.
"The Big Plant" aims to further enrich a large area adjoining Baxters Wetland and allow the community to appreciate the historical and environmental significance of this site. The planting will enhance the wildlife corridor that links Wonthaggi with the coastal reserve. The improvements to the environment will also attract more walking enthusiasts as well as providing an attractive place for locals to enjoy.
More than 35 local clubs and societies have signed up to assist with the Big Plant, which is supported by Parks Victoria, Rotary, Bass Coast Shire Council and Landcare
Beth Banks, a member of the organising committee, praised the local traders and supports who have donated materials and time to ensure the day runs smoothly. Lunch will be provided by Rotary for participants in the Big Plant.
"People in and around the Wonthaggi area have embraced the project so we’re guaranteed of a great day," said Beth.
Local school children are also involved in activities at Baxters Wetlands. On Thursday 2 and Friday 3 August more than 600 students from four local primary schools will be involved in tree planting activities, environmental education and art exercises.
"We have a number of retired school teachers, members from the Wonthaggi Arts Group and many other local people who have volunteered to assist the schools with these environmental activities," said Geoff. "It is a great opportunity for young people to learn in an environmental setting and have lots of fun in the process."
Everyone is welcome to take part in the Big Plant. If you’re interested, just turn up at Baxters Wetland (at the end of Campbell St.) on the outskirts of Wonthaggi from 10 am onwards on Sunday August 5th. Keep your eye out for Parks Victoria signs to guide you to the site. Everyone is encouraged to come along and be a part of this great day.
