Delve Into Art This May
Gippsland celebrates ‘Come and Play All of May
Bass Coast’s art community will be opening its doors this May, as Gippsland celebrates ‘Come and Play All of May’.
Join in the Arts Road Trip and go on a creative voyage of discovery and revel in the hidden talents and treasures at your doorstep. Bass Coast artists will be holding workshops, exhibitions, performances and more throughout the month.
Workshops range from watercolour, felting, basketry, sculpture, multimedia, flow techniques, glass jewellery and more. Try an art activity in Cowes, Archies Creek, Wonthaggi and Inverloch, or enjoy exhibitions and music events.
Come and Play All of May will be launched with drinks, nibbles, local musicians and fun, at the Archies Creek Hall on Saturday, 4 May from 2.00pm.
Everyone is welcome at the launch event, which will provide an insight into what the month long celebration will include.
The launch will also feature slow speed artist dating, where local artists show off the techniques they use in their workshops as well as their own and their students’ work.
A highlight of this year’s event is Bass Coast’s Creative Gippsland Artist in Residence, ceramicist Varuni Kanagasundaram. Varuni is a PhD candidate with RMIT University and is a highly experienced artist through exhibitions, workshops and presentations. Her practice investigates the cultural rituals undertaken by women from diverse backgrounds. The creative project ‘An Everyday Story She Tells’, shines a light on domestic rituals to celebrate women from diverse backgrounds coming together to hand make vessel forms out of clay.
An Artist in Residence information day will be held on Thursday, 9 May from 11.00am to 12.30pm at the Rescue Station Arts, 95 West Area Road in Wonthaggi.
Come and Play All of May is supported by Bass Coast Shire Council. For more information, visit www.creativegippsland.com.au or contact Council’s Team leader Recreation, Arts and Culture on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211.
