Councillors Approve First Round Small Grants

East Gippsland Shire Councillors have approved round one small grants funding for the new financial year.

At their meeting this week they voted to accept recommendations for funding under the Community Small Grants Program.

Three funding streams include Community Activities and Community Facilities Grants with provision for up to $5,000 and Community Festivals and Events Streams funding on a 1:1 basis of up to $5000 for regional activities, $2,000 for district and up to $5000 for local activities.

The first funding round for 2008/2009 attracted 53 applications to the value of $191,051.

Of these 27 were successful and amount of $59,573 was approved with $13,575 being granted to 10 Community Activities, $35,498 to 13 Community Facilities applications and $10,500 to four Festivals and Events applications.

Mayor Cr Mendy Urie said the grants reflected the diversity of needs and activities within the Shire.

"I am pleased we are able to assist such a broad range of applications that embrace sport, the arts and community development," she said.

The Community Small Grants Program has operated since 1994 and gives community-based groups the opportunity to access funding for a variety of needs.
