Latrobe Regional Gallery Gains Major Art Collection

A selection from the Cbus’ $10.9 million Australian art collection goes on public exhibition at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in Morwell from next Wednesday.

The exhibition is the forerunner of rotating exhibitions involving the Cbus collection, which will be housed at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in Morwell for the next ten years.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora said that the collection includes works by some of Australia’s greatest artists including Rupert Bunny, Arthur Streeton, Howard Arkley and Charles Blackman.

"This is a real coup for the Latrobe community. The partnership that has been developed between Cbus and the Latrobe Regional Gallery will allow this wonderful collection to be housed within the gallery as a permanent rotating exhibition. A major collection such as this is a real boon for regional art lovers who otherwise may not get to see work of such high calibre.

"The collection will also form the basis of touring exhibitions throughout Australia," Cr Zimora explained.

Cbus, the industry superannuation fund for the construction, building and allied industries, began investing in Australian art in the early 1980s under the guidance of renowned Australian art expert Dr Joseph Brown AO OBE. The collection consists of more than 315 works, including works by an excellent array of indigenous Australian artists and paintings by other contemporary artists including Peter Booth, Andrew Sibley, Robert Clinch and Juan Davila.

Previous Cbus board member, and one of the instigators of the collection, Mavis Robertson, AM, said she was delighted the collection is being housed in a regional gallery.

"One of the ideas on which the collection was founded was to bring art closer to the community. This has been achieved by housing the collection in a regional gallery," Ms Robertson added.

Cr Zimora added that to mark the arrival of the Cbus collection at the Gallery a new scholarship for curators is being launched.

"The inaugural Latrobe Regional Gallery Cbus Emerging Curatorial Scholarship will assist emerging curators to develop valuable training with a significant collection in a public gallery. This will be a great opportunity for new curators to develop their skills further," Cr Zimora concluded.

Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. Entry is free.
