Stage Two of Old Melbourne Road reconstruction works commence Stage Two of the reconstruction of Old Melbourne Road between Traralgon and Morwell has begun, with a variety of works scheduled to take place that will improve traffic conditions and safety for those who use the road in the future. By Latrobe Shire Council - 25th August 2004 - Back to News Major culverts will be installed across Waterhole, Plough and Tandarra Creeks on the new alignment of the road; road pavement and sealing work will be carried out; environmental fencing will be installed in order to protect the existing vegetation from construction machinery; road pavement on the existing alignment will be removed and topsoiled; and the surface will be prepared for planting in Autumn.
Latrobe City’s Maintenance Engineer, Jey Vyravipillai, said that the reconstruction works were divided into two stages in order to reduce the environmental impact on nearby grassy woodland vegetation and also to resolve Native Title concerns along the Western section of the project. Stage One, along the Eastern section of the project, was completed in November 2002.
"Latrobe City Council allocated funds in the Capital Works Program and the Roads to Recovery Program so that reconstruction works on Old Melbourne Road, between Alexanders Road and Airfield Road, could take place," Mr Vyravipillai said.
"Old Melbourne Road is located in an environmentally sensitive area and therefore any widening or realignment of the existing road could have an impact on the environment. Discussions concerning the alignment of the road on the Western section of the project took place with the Department of Sustainability and Environment so that the works would have the least possible effect on the environment," Mr Vyravipillai concluded.
Removal of Willow trees along Waterhole Creek and replanting of existing Malleleuca trees on the new alignment of the road was completed prior to the commencement of Stage Two as part of the Vegetation Restoration works.
Stage Two of the reconstruction of Old Melbourne Road is scheduled to end in October this year, weather conditions permitting. In order to ensure safety to road users, Old Melbourne Road is temporarily closed between Alexanders Road and Airfield Road until completion of the works.
