Visiting Victorian exhibition on display at Gallery

Latrobe Regional Gallery will host a visiting exhibition entitled ‘A Primrose from England’ from now until Sunday 7th December 2003.

By Latrobe City Council - 28th October 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s Manager Arts, Paul Holton said that the collection of Victorian narrative paintings highlighted themes of love, duty, forgiveness, death, war and human tragedy.

"The oil painting ‘A Primrose from England’ by Edward Hopley is the focal point for the exhibition as it illustrates the allegorical transplanting of a primrose from England, from its encapsulation, survival of the journey and its eventual display and acclimatisation. This mirrors the story of the many pieces of artwork from the collection, housed at the Bendigo Art Gallery, which explore the transplanting of social, political, cultural and philosophical ideals to cultivate a new land," Mr Holton explained.

"The exhibition consists of 42 works including paintings, watercolours and sculptures. The pieces are early acquisitions, gifts and bequests that reflect the taste and attitude of the Victorian era. Some works form part of the Bendigo Gallery’s permanent display, and others that have remained in storage for an extensive period due to their fragile condition, will be exhibited for the first time in many years, after conservation treatments," Mr Holton concluded.

Karen Quinlan, Director of Bendigo Art Gallery will present an address on the exhibition on Wednesday 5 November at 6pm at the Gallery.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays.
