Project Restores Tribute To First World War SoldiersTuesday 29 July is the 90th Anniversary of the planting of the Wooreen Avenue of Honour as a tribute to local soldiers who fought in the First World War. By Gardiner Foundation - 21st July 2008 - Back to News To mark the 90th anniversary the Avenue has been restored and 15 new oak trees will be planted to replace those lost through the years. Major General David McLachlan AO, State President of the Victorian RSL Branch, will officiate at the tree-planting ceremony at the Avenue of Honour at 2pm on 29 July, and unveil a plaque to commemorate the occasion.
Members of the community are invited to attend the tree planting and commemoration at the Avenue of Honour (Yarragon Road) at 2pm, and afterwards at the Leongatha RSL for afternoon tea.
Two local dairy farmers, Jeanne Dekker and Nicole Pouw have been the driving force to bring the local community together to clear and restore the Avenue which had declined over the years. They secured financial support from the Gardiner Foundation, Murray Goulburn and other local organizations. The South Gippsland Shire has played a key role and committed to maintain the Avenue of elm and oak trees.
The funding was provided by the Gardiner Foundation from the Working in Dairying Communities Small Grants Program, implemented by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal. The Small Grants Program provides up to $5,000 for projects which assist in strengthening small rural communities, building their capacity to deal with local issues, or enhancing existing community infrastructure.
