Latrobe City Council has welcomed the Federal Government’s funding announcement of $10 million towards the construction of the Latrobe Creative Precinct at the site of the existing performing arts centre in Traralgon.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter, said the announcement would drive forward plans to progress the design and build of the new facility.

"The $30 million Latrobe Creative Precinct offers a significant value proposition for the community beyond the contribution it will make as a new, versatile and high quality performing arts facility. It is something that blends arts development and presentation capability, vocational training, learning and participation programs with a broader engagement with the creative industries and the community.

"We’re delighted that the Federal Government has promised $10 million to help build this vitally important community project. With the State Government’s previous funding announcement of $10 million and Council’s own contribution of $10 million, the Latrobe Creative Precinct is now much closer to becoming a reality," Cr Rossiter said.

Council has already secured a Memorandum of Interest with Federation University and with Box Hill Institute to explore the delivery of arts and creative industry courses from the Precinct. The hope is to create a vibrant hub of creative industries education and training, to the benefit of hundreds of budding artists and local performers in the years to come.

The investment will also unlock a new corridor of opportunity for regional performing arts touring in Gippsland that will benefit both audiences and local industry.

"The local community, guided by the Get It Built campaign, has long voiced its desire for an updated facility in Traralgon. This project will deliver not just new and improved performance spaces, but outdoor event sites and larger back-stage areas and new change room facilities, high-tech educational facilities for performing arts students and multi-purpose community rooms.

"We’ve taken a holistic view of the arts and cultural needs of our community and included educational and vocational training initiatives to deliver a creative precinct that will be the envy of the region," Cr Rossiter said.

"The next step in the process is to prepare detailed architectural plans and drawings for the new facility.

"Now that we have the funding commitments from all levels of government we can move forward to a new era of creativity and innovation in Latrobe City," Cr Rossiter concluded.
