New hoist helps pool access

People with a physical disability, injury or limited mobility will have improved access to the Warragul Leisure Centre’s hydrotherapy pool due to the installation of a hoist and transfer chair.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 1st August 2006 - Back to News

The leisure centre received funding from Latrobe Community Health Service who made funds available to one local government operated or auspiced heated pool in each local government area in Gippsland.

"The Warragul Leisure Centre received the funding for Baw Baw Shire and this hoist will improve access to the hydrotherapy pool for people with a physical disability or limited mobility," said Baw Baw Shire Council chief executive officer Glenn Patterson.

The new hoist and chair reduces the amount of transfers from mobility aids to the pool making access easier for carers and users.

Kim Barr, access service coordinator, from the Warragul Leisure Centre said that the project aim was to have no physical transfer take place when someone wanted to access the water.

"Hoists are now available with transfer chairs which make access more dignified for the swimmer and safer for the user as no lifting is involved.

"We hope to gain funding for a pool lift stretcher that will again make going for a swim easier for both the carer and the swimmer.

"We’re extremely grateful to have received funding from Latrobe Community Health Service for this valuable piece of equipment," said Ms Barr.
