Latrobe City’s acting chief executive officer, Peggy Stevenson, said that the seminar offered early childhood workers the chance to participate in various sessions throughout the course of the day, each looking at a different aspect of children’s early development.

"To open the seminar, Robyn Moore, Australia’s most in-demand female speaker, will motivate and inspire with her ‘Power of the Word’ presentation. Ms Moore will show the the audience how to take responsibility for choices and create the outcomes they desire both professionally and personally," Ms Stevenson explained.

"Then, through a series of hands-on sessions on Saturday, participants will be able to explore a range of activities on agility, literacy, language and special needs," Ms Stevenson added.

Latrobe City’s children’s services co-ordinator, Kate Kerslake, said that the seminar was open to anybody involved in working with children.

"We believe that preschool, childcare and family day care workers; nannies and playgroup leaders, and any others who work with young children will benefit tremendously from attending the workshops," Ms Kerslake said.

"There are concurrent sessions throughout the day covering a variety of important topics. For example, for agility ability, participants will explore movement games used indoors to enhance a child’s development and burn up energy. The session on literacy looks at a range of activities to promote early literacy including rhyme, rhythm, starting sounds, as well as early writing skills.

"The session on children with additional needs gives the participants simple inclusion strategies for children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome and developmental delay. The workshop on language explores activities to stimulate language development whether it is meal time, group time, or play time," Ms Kerslake explained.

"There is also a group session on ‘growing with music’ which will be conducted by Hilary Henshaw, a past Melba Scholar who is a music and speech teacher, specialising in early years education, as well as an accomplished singer and actor," Ms Kerslake added.

"The seminar is designed to be a fun, practical way to refresh and update children’s early development strategies. With Robyn Moore’s opening presentation, it is bound to inspire and motivate participants too," Ms Kerslake concluded.

The seminar will open at 6.30pm on Friday 11 August at the Morwell Club, Helen Street for a three course meal and Robyn Moore’s ‘Power of the Word’ presentation.

The workshops will take place on Saturday 12 August with registration from 8am, concluding at 5pm.

Fees for the Friday and Saturday are $130; for the Saturday only $100 and for the Friday only $30.

To register for the seminar, contact Brigitte Stuckey at Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700, or email brigittest@latrobe.vic.gov.au.
