Get involved in the GamesWellington Shire Council is inviting community groups to register their interest in becoming involved in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. By Wellington Shire Council - 26th July 2005 - Back to News The XVIII Commonwealth Games will be held from 15-26 March 2006 in Melbourne, and will bring together 4,500 athletes from 71 nations.
Wellington Mayor Peter Gault said: "We are hosting a special Warm Up for the Games Day on November 20 and we’d love to see lots of people participating. We will also be hosting the Queens Baton Relay in February as well as holding local celebrations for the opening of the Games in March.
"We invite Wellington’s community groups to be involved in all of these celebrations and this is an open invitation for them to register their interest."
Cr Gault said the Games would be the ideal backdrop to showcase what’s special about Wellington’s towns.
"Capitalising on the importance of the Games means Council, schools, sports clubs, community groups and individuals need to work together and plan ahead to make Wellington’s events a great success.
"Schools, local businesses and community groups may be interested in participating in a week-long festival, organising ‘come and try’ events as a springboard to encourage people to be more physically active or developing an exhibition of local sporting history or heroes.
"We look forward to hearing your ideas."
Cr Gault said Wellington Shire’s host nation for the Games will be Ghana, and elements of Ghana’s culture will be included in our celebrations.
The Council has also invited towns with existing events throughout the year to register for promotion on the new Tourism Wellington website in the Calendar of Events section.
