Shrine Visit Winner AnnouncedJake Nolder of Morwell Park Primary School has recently been announced as the winner of Latrobe City Council’s ‘Visit the Shrine’ competition. By Latrobe City Council - 22nd June 2007 - Back to News His description of what ANZAC means to him has won his class a fully-funded trip to the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora said that the competition, devised and coordinated by Latrobe City, was open to local primary schools and a large number of entries were received from all across Gippsland.
"Students were asked to describe what ANZAC means to them and the submissions were reviewed and judged by representatives from the Morwell RSL.
"The winning entry came from Jake Nolder a Grade 6 student from Morwell Park Primary School. His class will now undertake a fully-funded, visit to the Shrine of Remembrance, which will include an educative tour of the building, its history and surrounds," Cr Zimora explained.
Jake said that he was very excited with the news that his class would have the opportunity to visit the shrine.
"I felt very proud that my ANZAC story was chosen over all the other Grade 6 entries. I look forward to learning more about ANZAC Day and visiting the shrine with my classmates and teachers. I'm sure it will be a great experience for us all," Jake added.
Jake’s teacher, Matthew Snell said that the competition had been a terrific activity that inspired great discussions to complement the work the students had been doing about ANZAC Day.
"All the children completed quality short stories and poems that were often heartfelt, full of their own personal meaning and very respectful of the day. We were ecstatic when we found out that Jake's entry was chosen as the winning response and we are all looking forward to the upcoming visit. We would like to express our thanks to Latrobe City for running such a worthwhile competition," Mr Snell said.
Dennis Cleary, CEO/Secretary of Morwell RSL Sub Branch was honoured to be able to judge the competition.
"The quality of the work was outstanding, with a great degree of originality shown. ANZAC Day and the ANZAC tradition are very dear to the hearts of all in the RSL, so it was extremely pleasing to see that the ANZAC history is being carried on with the young people at our schools," Mr Cleary added.
Cr Zimora echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the efforts of the students involved.
"It is very pleasing that there are many young people at our schools who are learning about and understanding the significance of the ANZAC tradition. For the Grade 6 students from Morwell Park Primary School that learning is about to become a visual experience which will help develop an even deeper understanding of what it means to be an ANZAC," Cr Zimora concluded.
Jake Nolder’s winning entry:
WHAT ANZAC DAY MEANS TO ME
It makes me feel proud because I’m an Australian.
Australia New Zealand Army Corps.
The name helps me remember the people that died at Gallipolli.
When I buy an ANZAC badge I buy it with happiness and also with sadness. But I also think of the people from Australia that died at Gallipolli.
