New Roundabout For Improved Flow

A new roundabout will be constructed on West Area Road road to help manage increased road traffic expected from construction work on the desalination plant.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th July 2009 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council has developed a plan for the roundabout as part of a series of road improvements to lessen the impact of the desalination plant on the local community.

Infrastructure Director, Steven Piasente, said a preliminary plan for West Area Road has already been developed.

"The plan is to improve traffic flow in the area by constructing a large roundabout," explained Mr Piasente.

"The roundabout will be approximately 21m wide, which is considerably bigger than the one in Billson Street.

"There will also be improvements to footpaths within West Area Road, outside the hospital and along to Coalfields Caravan Park. The existing footpath into Guide Park will be moved, to ensure that pedestrians are not too close to the new roundabout," Mr Piasente continued.

"The pedestrian refuge and bus stop area opposite Rose Lodge will be upgraded, as will the street lighting. This includes putting the existing powerlines underground."

Mr Piasente confirmed that West Area Road and Webb Road would be sealed as part of the road works.

"Lower Powlett Road will be the main access road to the desal plant for construction vehicles, so we are expecting that local and commuter traffic will increase on West Area and Webb Roads as people look for alternative routes," Mr Piasente said.

"We will be sealing these roads to help to lessen the impact of the traffic."

Public access to the hospital will be maintained throughout the construction period, with arrangements in place for an alternative entrance for cars.

A copy of the planned roadworks and roundabout can be viewed at the Customer Service Centre in Wonthaggi or on Council’s website. Construction of the roundabout will start in late November this year.
