Unlocking the future for Loch

Consultants ‘Planning by Design’ have been appointed by Council to facilitate the development over the next four months of an Urban Design Framework (UDF) for the township of Loch.

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 5th November 2004 - Back to News

The UDF will provide a future vision for Loch, identifying viable roles and functions for the town that faces new challenges since the completion of the bypass. It will seek to tell the community’s "story": the history and culture that reflects its character and heritage, and to establish a clear strategy to attract visitors to the town.

The team will be lead by Stephen Sully from Planning by Design, a strategic planning and design practice that has experience in working with small communities similar to Loch, throughout Victoria.

Mr Sully said that he looked forward very much to working with the community on the development of the framework and saw it as an opportunity to ‘kick start’ a number of the projects and initiatives that the community had already identified.

"There appears to be a wealth of existing plans and ideas for Loch. I see the Framework, wherever possible, building on and prioritising this work in a strategic fashion and equipping the local community and the Council to actively pursue the implementation phase. We want to get things happening in Loch, not simply prepare another plan, " he said.

"The effects of the bypass have always been a concern. The UDF gives Loch the opportunity it needs to develop into a town that people will want to come off the highway to visit," President of the Loch Community Development Association, Lorraine Knox said. " We really hope all members of the community contribute their ideas and play their part in Loch's future"

The project, which will include a range of opportunities for input, review and comment by the local community, has received funding under the State Government’s " Pride of Place" program.

A survey seeking initial ideas has already been circulated throughout the town, seeking ideas on:

  • What aspects of Loch are valued and need to be retained?
  • What aspects of Loch are disliked and need to be changed?
  • What new aspects need to be created in Loch?

The survey also asks the community to prioritise a range of ideas and initiatives already identified in prior projects.

The survey should be returned to the South Gippsland Shire Council by Monday 15th November and the feedback will be discussed at the Community Ideas Workshop to be held at the Loch Public Hall on Wednesday 17th November commencing at 7.30pm.
