Some thirty local young people, supported by Wellington Shire Council, are joining forces to hold a Winter Sleepout in Sale on Friday 8 August as part of a Victoria-wide drive to raise awareness of homelessness.

The Sale event, being held at the Council’s OA Ruff Sports Stadium will also be looking to raise money for the Melbourne Citymission programs, which aim to tackle and prevent homelessness in the State’s capital.

Those involved locally in the Sleepout are collectively known as the Wellington Youth Committees and comprise members of the Council’s SHOUT Youth Committee, along with the: Streets of Harmony Youth Committee; Newsletter Committee, Skate Park Committee; LIVE Youth Theatre Group; Freeza Committee; and Dance Core Committee.

They are appealing to local businesses and community groups for donations to ensure the event is a success, including sponsorship to add to that already pledged by Muffin Break, Centre Bakery, Seafood Supermarket and the OA Ruff Sports Stadium, as well as food for the night.

Anyone who would like to support this worthy effort should contact Wellington Shire’s Youth Development Officer Rebecca Froud on 5142 3340.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "It’s all too easy to ignore this problem here in Gippsland, so it’s great to see the young people of Wellington coming together like this for such a worthwhile cause. We wish them every success for the evening."
