Road Condition AlertMotorbike riders and drivers visiting Phillip Island for the Moto GP are reminded to take care as extra traffic from the desalination plant and other heavy vehicles are taking a toll on local roads. By Bass Coast - 15th October 2010 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, said all motorists need to be aware of road conditions.
"We want to make sure that all visitors coming for the GP have a great time," said Mr Piasente.
"Many riders take the opportunity to explore the hills around our Shire and they need to be aware that this year some of these roads are showing signs of wear and tear.
"These roads were not made to withstand the heavy vehicles and use that they are receiving and coupled with the wet winter and spring we have just experienced, some roads are in a poor state of repair.
"Thiess Degremont has advised us that they now have extra resources for road maintenance and repair so that they can respond as quickly as possible to road damage," continued Mr Piasente.
Council has successfully lobbied VicRoads to implement reduced speed limits on some roads and signage for this will be installed soon.
"Thiess has traffic signage and control measures on some roads where construction traffic is heaviest – riders should look out for these."
Council will continue to work constructively with Thiess Degremont and AquaSure to address road and traffic issues so that the roads are maintained in a safe condition.
