Morwell firm develops major safety solution Morwell-based company, Sage Technology, has played a key role in a major safety project at Woodside Energy. By Lynda Bertoli - 19th January 2009 - Back to News Morwell-based company, Sage Technology, has played a key role in a major safety project at Woodside Energy.
Sage Technology was contracted by Woodside Energy to develop a web-based software system that enabled the oil and gas company to implement its Integrated Safe System of Work (ISSoW). The system, SageSURPASS, is the result of thousands of hours of development work and extensive testing.
It went live on the Northern Endeavour, an offshore facility in the East Timor Sea in October, and the Goodwyn A Platform on Western Australia’s North Shelf this month. It will be progressively rolled out across all of Woodside Energy’s production facilities in 2009. The initial implementations were supported offshore by two members of Sage Technology’s development team.
SageSURPASS is used to perform hazard identification and risk assessments on all jobs undertaken. It has several inbuilt risk assessment tools and was developed to comply with AS/NZS 4360 risk assessment standards as well as the United Kingdom’s Health and Safety Executive specifications for permit to work, isolation management, and Hazard Factor Assessment
It will allow Woodside Energy to standardise its permit to work procedures across all current and future production sites. Any procedural changes will be made centrally and then applied to all sites using SageSURPASS.
The keynote address at the 2008 PAS/SageSURPASS Users Group Meeting in Gladstone, Queensland told the story of the development of SageSURPASS between Woodside and Sage. PAS is another Sage Technology system used to manage permit to work, lockout/tagout and isolations at power stations, minerals processing plant and manufacturing sites throughout Australia and internationally.
ISSoW is the single biggest change Woodside Energy’s has made to its permitry system, and SageSURPASS is the tool being used to make it happen.
Woodside Energy’s requirement to implement an ISSoW that was based on world best practice led to significant investigation, planning and preparation of its Integrated Safe System of Work before engaging Sage Technology.
Sage Technology Director, Peter Kingwill, said SageSURPASS was the largest single development project undertaken in the company’s 18 year history.
"We had a dedicated team of developers who put in extremely long hours over a period of 11 months to deliver the system to Woodside," he said, "But even though it was hard work, it has also been an exciting time with the development of a new product and our entrance into the oil and gas industry."
Mr Kingwill said the company was now actively marketing SageSURPASS to the oil and gas industry and other industries, and expected to win new clients throughout Australia and internationally in the coming months.
"We have a strong record in the delivery of safe work systems with PAS and now SageSURPASS and we will be extending that record with other products that are currently under development," he said.
