‘Odd couple’ unclaimed - so need new home

A sheep and a black Labrador dog nicknamed ‘the odd couple’ who made front page news in the Latrobe Valley Express when they were found wandering together through Morwell’s CBD earlier this month, have still not been claimed.

By Latrobe City Council - 28th January 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s Manager Local Laws, Peter Fraser, said as a consequence, a new home for them is now being sought by Council.

"In this particular case, we impounded the animals for an extended period of time as it was quite possible the owners were away and were unaware the animals were at large.

"There is only a requirement for Council to impound the animals for eight days before making other arrangements for their future, but in this case we wanted to give the pair every opportunity of being reunited with their owner," Mr Fraser said.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said that Council was keen to ensure the two unlikely friends were kept together if possible, and adopted by the same owner.

"There were a number of expressions of interest from residents who saw the photograph of the ‘odd couple’ in the newspaper and were keen to adopt the pair and contacted us; but at that stage they could have been claimed by their owner and were not available for adoption.

"A number of offers kindly made to Council at the time the animals were found may also have been impractical. It’s important that any new owners realise the responsibilities pets bring and are prepared to take on those responsibilities," Cr Middlemiss stressed.

Mr Fraser said an ideal home would be one in a rural setting. "A sheep cannot be kept on an urban block so a likely owner would live on two hectares or more," Mr Fraser said.

Both animals will have a full veterinary check prior to rehousing and as a consequence a nominal fee will be charged for their release.
