Quest for Improved Public Transport

Wellington Shire Council will be holding two public forums on Thursday, 30 August to investigate the needs of an improved public transport system within the Shire.

By Wellington Shire Council - 28th August 2007 - Back to News

The forums will be held in the Wellington Room, at the Wellington Shire Council offices in Sale.

"The issue of public transport is important to the future of our Shire, as access to public transport is becoming a major concern," said Bruce Graham, Director of Strategic Development for Wellington Shire Council

"Additional rail and bus services will assist in the economic and social development of the shire.

"These forums will help identify the particular needs and preferences of the Wellington community," said Mr Graham.

A breakfast forum will be held for business and government people from 8am to 9am. This will be followed by a general community forum from 10am to 12 noon.

"Indications are that the Shire is in need of further passenger rail services to and from Melbourne and added bus services travelling between the townships within the region.

"At the moment there is a large number of residents unable to gain access to social, educational, employment and training opportunities due to the limited accessibility of the current public transport system," said Mr Graham.

The Council in conjunction with the Department of Infrastructure is examining the requirements within Wellington Shire for improved rail services and bus connections to rail services.

"At present a large number of residents are travelling to Traralgon to take advantage of its more frequent rail services to Melbourne.

"This is an added inconvenience and our townships which would normally cater to these residents will suffer in the long run," said Mr Graham.

"The lack of rail and bus services also places stress on families and the elderly needing to travel to and from Melbourne and the surrounding areas of the region."

Each forum will address the important transport issues within the region. Suggestions and comments taken from the forums will be presented in a business case which will be passed onto the State Government.

Two forums will be held in the Wellington Room, at the Wellington Shire Council offices, 70 Foster Street, Sale on Thursday, 30 August 2007.
