Public comment wanted on draft tourism strategy

Baw Baw Shire Council has developed a draft Nature Based Tourism Development Strategy to help identify potential tourism development sites and to assist with attracting private nature based tourism investments and projects in the shire.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 25th July 2006 - Back to News

According to council chief executive officer, Mr Glenn Patterson, council acknowledges that tourism plays a valuable role in local communities delivering economic, social and environmental benefits.

"This strategy is important for council to be in a position to plan and capitalise on the future tourism potential of the shire," Mr Patterson said.

"Through this report process, we have investigated ways that we can develop projects that will assist to stimulate visitation, length of stay, yield and visitor dispersal across the shire, as well as encouraging investment in our region.

"During the strategy’s development phase, there has been consultation with various stakeholders and now that a draft is available, we’re hoping the public will also provide feedback before it is formally adopted by council," said Mr Patterson.

The Baw Baw Tourism Advisory Board has been active in the project, initiating the concept for the touring route and gaining council support in funding the strategy.

Council also secured $25,000 in funding from the State Government dedicated to the project.

Public forums are being held at the Yarragon Community Hall on 1 August, Noojee Hotel on 2 August and at Rawson Village on 8 August.

Copies of the draft strategy are available at www.bawbawshire.vic.gov.au or by contacting Gabrielle Vaughan on 5624 2522.

Written submissions will be accepted until Tuesday, 8 August 2006.
