Footy clinic a big hit with local youthAround 35 young people braved the elements to attend a football clinic held at Gaskin Park, Churchill recently. By Latrobe City Council - 12th September 2003 - Back to News Organised by the Latrobe City Youth Action Centre, Kangaroos star and local boy Troy Makepeace spent more than an hour with the young people teaching them various football skills.
Youth Action Centre worker, Tanya Harrington, said that the enthusiastic crowd were keen to take advantage of the great opportunity for expert tuition combined with a fun evening out.
"Troy Makepeace encouraged the young people to be involved in their local community sporting groups. He talked to them about how he achieved his own goals and gave advice on having a positive outlook about future direction," Ms Harrington said.
"Troy was more than happy to enjoy a barbeque meal with the young people, signed autographs and posed for photos. It was great for the young people to meet someone from their own area who has gone on to reach the highest ranks of his chosen profession. It was a great inspiration," Ms Harrington explained.
"The event was a great success and on behalf of Latrobe City Council, the Youth Action Centre would like to thank Churchill Football Netball Club for providing their venue and for their support throughout the clinic," Ms Harrington concluded.
Cr Darrell White, a former President of the Churchill Football Netball Club, said Troy was an excellent role model for young people in Latrobe City who had reached the pinnacle of Australian Rules Football. "Troy has shown a significant degree of tenacity in fulfilling his career as one of Victoria’s leading AFL footballers," Cr White said.
"I know first hand that he had many hurdles to overcome to achieve his ambitions, yet he persevered and maintained focus where others might have given up. Young people can be impressed with his performance on the field and his commitment to the game.
"As municipal leaders we are proud of Troy’s achievements, and commend him for sharing his talent and time with other young people in Latrobe City," Cr White added.
Latrobe City Youth Action Centres are for young people aged 12 to 18 and are open on Monday in Traralgon from 4pm to 8pm, on Tuesday in Moe from 4pm to 8pm and on Wednesday in Churchill from 4pm to 7pm.
