Latrobe City’s Pacers sponsorship continues

Latrobe City Council has recently reconfirmed its commitment to the region's national basketball team with a three year extension on its sponsorship agreement.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that the sponsorship deal ensured the high profile team would continue to promote both the game and the region.

"The Latrobe City Pacers are the region’s premier basketball team and will be competing in the Australian Basketball Association Big V League in 2005. They will play eleven home games throughout the year, with five at Moe, five at Traralgon and one at Sale. The games at Moe and Traralgon are held at Council owned and operated venues," Cr Lougheed said.

"The Pacers are a great promotional tool for our region and proudly wear the Latrobe City colours (black and orange) as well as displaying our logo on their uniforms," Cr Lougheed explained.

"We will also be investigating ways in which the players, particularly the overseas imports, can help promote to local school children the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle," Cr Lougheed added.

Cr Lougheed said that the sponsorship deal also included funding for Latrobe City Energy, the junior equivalent of the Pacers.

"Latrobe City Energy will, this year, field male and female teams in the Victorian Basketball League, division one. It is hoped that the Pacers and Energy will formally combine in the near future to form one peak basketball body for the region.

"Both teams have worked well with Latrobe City over the years and we believe this sponsorship will help develop a structure that will see basketball in the area reach new heights, keeping it sustainable for the next three years and beyond," Cr Lougheed explained.

Latrobe City Pacers President, David Roberts said that the club welcomed the continuation of sponsorship.

"As a club we are able to continue to represent the local area, building our community profile. We are particularly pleased to be playing games in Moe and Traralgon and hope that the local community show us its support by attending the matches," Mr Roberts added.

Cr Lougheed added that the timing of the sponsorship extension was particularly appropriate.

"Our support of basketball is fitting considering the excitement that will be generated in the region next March when the Commonwealth Games comes to Traralgon," Cr Lougheed concluded.
