New Diploma launched at Gala Night!GippsTAFE’s Access Department recently hosted a Gala Night for the general public at GippsTAFE’s Morwell Campus. By GippsTAFE - 3rd November 2003 - Back to News The Gala Night was held to promote the 2004 Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing, which will be conducted for the first time at GippsTAFE in February.
The first guest speaker for the night was Monash University Coordinator Elizabeth Hart, who actually started her journalism education by the Professional Writing and Editing Course at a TAFE Institute.
Ms Hart explained that the Diploma course could lead to many other education pathways, including University.
"Monash University is currently looking at new learning pathways within its journalism degree. If students have this TAFE Diploma they may be entitled to six to 12 month’s credit on a journalism degree at Monash," said Ms Hart.
The second guest speaker for the evening was award winning author and GippsTAFE teacher Catherine Bateson.
Ms Bateson has recently been awarded "Book of the Year for Young Readers" at the Children’s Book Council Awards for her story "Rain May and Captain Daniel."
She also made the honours list for older readers with her book "Painted Love Letters."
Ms Bateson told the audience that she began her writing career as a poet and in order to teach herself about poetry she had to learn a lot more about herself.
Ms Bateson explained that she judged how good or bad her poetry was by it’s acceptance for publication, reading her poetry aloud to others and by displaying her work.
In 1990 her first poetry collection was published.
"Students now are privileged to be able to study the craft of writing as it gives writers so many choices and career directions. Writers can now choose novel and poetry writing, journalism or even corporate writing,’ said Ms Bateson.
"Courses like the Professional Writing and Editing course does what it took me decades to do, learn to write well."
Ms Bateson said that the class was unique as students could hear feedback from their peers and experienced writers and also be taught editing skills, which is vital when submitting manuscripts to publishers.
"You never know where writing will take you, I still wake up in the morning and think ‘Wow, I can’t believe that I am a published writer’ and I am never bored,’ said Ms Bateson.
The Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing can be completed on campus or on-line through the TAFE Virtual Campus and will be available in 2004.
The Diploma provides training in creative, business, technical writing and editing, photography for writers and the production of texts.
