Dusty Springfield tribute show comes to TraralgonAs part of the Morning Music series, Wendy Stapleton’s 'Dusty, Doris and Me' tribute show is coming to the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 23 February at 11am. By Latrobe City Council - 15th February 2005 - Back to News Performing Arts and Venues Coordinator, Kathleen Roberts said that the show was a valentine to Dusty Springfield, Britain’s greatest female pop singer, and to her thirty-five year career in music, as well as the music of Doris Day.
"Dusty Springfield endured because of her unique, heartbreaking voice but also because of her unfailing taste in songwriters including Carole King and Jerry Goffin, Randy Newman, John Kander and Fred Ebb, Michael Legrand and Marilyn Bergman and, most importantly Burt Bacharach and Hal David," Ms Roberts explained.
"Wendy Stapleton trained as a youngster in classical ballet, tap, acting and singing, Wendy made her first professional appearance at the age of nine at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Noel Coward’s ‘Sail Away’. She then performed regularly with J C Williamson for many years combining with weekly performances on GTV 9’s Tarax Show. At 16 she became a professional vocalist and has performed with the best of Australian talent, among them John Farnham, Glen Shorrock, Jon English and Joe Camilleri," Ms Roberts said.
"In 1979 she signed with Mushroom Records and formed ‘Wendy and the Rocketts’, touring Australian and overseas with acts including Bryan Adams, ZZ Top, Hall and Oates. Her self-penned single ‘Play the Game’ went to No. 2 on the national charts," Ms Roberts said.
Ms Roberts added that Wendy Stapleton’s singing career had also embraced theatre performances such as ‘Bad Boy Johnny’ ‘The Magic Show’ ‘The Sentimental Bloke’ ‘What’s Going On’ ‘I Only Wanna Be With You – The Dusty Springfield Story both here and in the UK.
"‘Two Up’ with Glen Shorrock, ‘Dusty, Doris and Me’ and ‘Screen Gems’ with Dean Lotherington and more recently the acclaimed all girl show also starring Debra Byrne and Nikki Nicholls called ‘Girls Girls Girls!’, Ms Roberts concluded.
