The benefits of new legislation for owner-buildersThe benefits of new owner-builder legislation for those looking to build their own home will be the focus of a Wellington Shire Council-supported information seminar being held in Sale on Monday 30 May. By Wellington Shire Council - 16th May 2005 - Back to News From 14 June this year new owner-builder laws will be introduced in Victoria to provide greater protection for consumers, genuine owner-builders and registered building practitioners. One consequence will be that unregistered builders will no longer be able to avoid registration fees and insurance by operating as a surrogate owner or by persuading owners to be the builder.
The free seminar has been organised by the Building Commission Victoria to enable owner-builders to find out what the new laws will mean and how they will operate. This session will be held at the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre, 100 Foster Street, Sale, Monday 30 May, starting at 6.30pm.
Building Commission figures show that rural Victoria is a hot spot for owner-building, accounting for 42% of all owner-builder work in the state. In the last financial year $2.1 billion worth of owner-builder building permits were issued in Victoria, accounting for almost 25% of all domestic building permits issued.
Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "This shire is currently enjoying strong home building and construction growth. We would encourage residents who are considering owner-building to attend this invaluable information session designed show how they can avoid pitfalls and protect themselves under the new legislation."
