Bass Coast Goes GreenThe Bass Coast Environmental Alliance hosted their seventh annual World Environment Day Expo last week. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 20th June 2006 - Back to News Just under 500 local students from eight primary and secondary schools participated in the Schools Expo, which was held over two days.
Expo Coordinator and Council’s Environmental Coastal Officer, Derek Hibbert, said that through the Expo, students were able to gain a better understanding about environmental issues.
"The students participated in hands on activities and interpretative displays at sites across the Shire, including San Remo Recreation Centre, Fishers Wetland, San Remo beack beach and the Wonthaggi Recycling depot.
"Inverloch, Cowes, Newhaven and San Remo Primary Schools, Poowong Consolidated, South Coast Christian College, Newhaven College and Korumburra Secondary College all took part," informed Mr Hibbert.
About 50 members of the public also attended a series of Sustainable Living Presentations held on Wednesday evening.
The program included an outline of three key environmental projects in the region, including:
· The 2005/06 Business Environmental Sustainability Recognition Program presented by Covener of the Bass Coast Roundtable – Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Reserve, David Jobe;
· Phillip Island’s Plastic Bag Free Challenge presented by Project Leader, Steve Fuery; and
· Climate Change Impacts in the Western Port Region presented by Coordinator of the Western Port Greenhouse Alliance, Dan Garlick.
· Home Energy Efficiencies presented by Energy Explorer representative, Indy Lingam.
"These presentations and the Schools Expo were held to facilitate learning in our community about environmental values and how people can minimise environmental impacts.
"The more we learn about our environment as a community the more we will be able to make a difference," asserted Mr Hibbert.
Members of the Bass Coast Environmental Alliance include Bass Coast Shire Council, Bass Coast Landcare, Parks Victoria, Phillip Island Nature Park, Coast Action/Coastcare, Westernport Water and South Gippsland Water.
"The Alliance members would like to thank the other environmental and local volunteer organisations that helped to conduct the education activities and set up displays.
"This is a marvellous example of what can take place when we all work together," said Mr Hibbert.
