Focus On Food Safety

Bass Coast Shire Council Environmental Health Officers will be working with food business premises to ensure all food safety requirements are met before on the spot fines are introduced in 2010.

Council Environmental Health Officer (EHO), Carl Gheller, said a State Government review of the Food Act is expected to be complete in early 2010. This will introduce new powers for EHOs, including the power to issue on the spot fines for various breaches of the Food Act.

"Council officers have spent many hours with food business owners educating them on how to use a Food Safety Program and how to keep food safety records," said Mr Gheller

"Recent inspections by Council officers have shown that some food business owners aren’t keeping Food Safety Programs on site and in some instances food safety records are not being properly maintained.

"We also believe there is a need for greater compliance with food equipment maintenance and food handler hygiene practices.

"We plan to work with food businesses within the Shire in 2009 to ensure they are well aware of their responsibilities in relation to the Food Act before on the spot fines are introduced for breaches of the Act in 2010," stated Mr Gheller.

Under the Food Act, food business owners have a legal obligation to sell safe and suitable food to their customers. They are obliged to comply with the Australian Food Standards Code, the Food Act and all of its provisions, and to keep accurate and true Food Safety Program records.

Food business owners requiring further information should contact Bass Coast Shire Council on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) and ask for the Environmental Health Team.
