New landscaping adds finishing touch to Apex Park

New trees and shrubs have been planted at Apex Park, completing the finishing touches to the redevelopment of the area.

By Latrobe City Council - 12th July 2006 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, councillor Lisa Price, said that the stone wall had been replaced and gardens beds had been installed and planted.

"The wall, built in the 1960s by the Moe Apex Club, needed to be replaced as it had become unstable and was showing signs of wear and tear. Council workers put in a garden bed along the length of the park and this area has been mulched and planted," Cr Price explained.

"The toilet block was removed and replaced with a more modern, sleek design in time for the Commonwealth Games, so now with the garden beds installed and planted, the park landscape is very pleasing to the eye," Cr Price added.

Latrobe City’s gardener-in-charge, Kathryn Stolk, said the plants had been chosen as much for their colour as their drought-tolerance.

"We have used specimen trees, Acer ‘October Glory’ planted at regular intervals to provide a glorious display of autumn colour. The shrubs that have been planted along the length of the beds are Buxus microphylla, Nandina domestica ‘nana’ and Phormium ‘Platts Black’.

"These plants provide an eye-catching display of colour, texture and shape, and they are very drought-hardy. There will also be a timed drip irrigation system installed to ensure that only the necessary amount of water is used to keep the plants healthy and blooming," Kathryn concluded.
