Botanical artist to deliver Gallery talk on Tisdall’s workInternationally renowned botanical artist, Celia Rosser, will discuss her own work in relation to a series of illustrations by Henry Thomas Tisdall, at a talk being presented at 10.30am on Tuesday 2 May at the Latrobe Regional Gallery. By Latrobe City Council - 1st May 2006 - Back to News The work of botanist Henry Thomas Tisdall is currently showing at the Gallery and continues for another eight weeks.
Early in her artistic career, Celia Rosser began painting uniquely Australian wildflowers. In 1965 her first exhibition at Leveson Gallery in Melbourne included three watercolours of banksias. In 1967 she published her first book Wildflowers of Victoria. Rosser's talent for botanical illustration was immediately recognised and her reputation for artistic and accurate depictions of Australian flora grew.
She is now among the world's finest botanical artists and is recognised internationally for her Banksia paintings. The works reflect her total commitment to both technical excellence and aesthetic presentation, and her paintings rank alongside such botanical greats as W H Fitch and the Bauer brothers.
Henry Thomas Tisdall was a 19th century noted botanist and botanical illustrator who lived and worked in Walhalla for a number of years. The works in the exhibition currently on show at Latrobe Regional Gallery, which are on loan from Moe and District Historical Society, were donated to the Society by Tisdall's daughter Constance in memory of his time in Walhalla.
The works in the exhibition depict plants in Walhalla and district completed during the years 1881-1883 with one work from the Royal Botanic Gardens completed in 1895. The Society received an ‘Arts Victoria Creating Place and Space Funding Program’ grant to have these historical works conserved.
Ms Rossers talk will be preceded with coffee and tea at 10.30am with the talk commencing at 11am. The cost is $5, $3 Concession. Members of the Latrobe Regional Gallery Friends are free.
