Latrobe City mayor, Cr Kellie O’Callaghan, said that the Gippsland hockey community had, for a number of years, advocated the need to develop a synthetic surface in Gippsland.

"The new hockey facility is a partnership project between Latrobe City Council, Monash University, and the State government. The project was initiated through the Gippsland Hockey Facilities Strategic Plan 2007, which was developed in collaboration with other Gippsland municipalities.

"The synthetic pitch will be a wonderful addition for the Gippsland hockey community, who selected the Monash campus as their preferred location. Once the facility is complete, both hockey and soccer players will be able to rest assured that the weather conditions will not stop them from enjoying their sport," Cr O’Callaghan said.

Latrobe City’s general manager built and natural environment sustainability, Peter Quigley, explained that there has been significant investment in the Churchill community in recent times.

"$870,000 was allocated to the synthetic hockey facility and $4.8 million was used to redevelop Latrobe Leisure Churchill. These two upgrades will give a major boost the recreational and leisure pursuits of those living in the Churchill area.

"Works on the synthetic hockey pitch will commence in early 2011. The hockey community have campaigned tirelessly for this facility and once it is constructed it will be a major benefit both to the local and the wider Gippsland region," Mr Quigley concluded.
