2004-2005 waste recycling up more than five-fold

Latrobe City residents are emerging as among the state leaders when it comes to recycling waste, contrary to recent reports placing the community’s recycling efforts well below the state average.

By Latrobe City Council - 6th September 2005 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said that figures recently released, which referred to data collected in the 2003-2004 year, predated the introduction of Latrobe City’s three-bin system which operated for the whole of the 2004-2005 year.

"There has been an enormous turnaround in the twelve months since the 2003-2004 year when the diversion rate of rubbish from landfill to processing facilities in Latrobe City was 9.9%. In just twelve months the diversion rate increased to 58.3%," Cr Lougheed explained.

Cr Lougheed said that Council was not disputing the accuracy of the 2003-2004 data. "The published data in fact paints a very clear picture of where Latrobe City stood prior to the introduction of the three-bin system. It demonstrates very clearly why we as a community needed to dramatically lift our game," Cr Lougheed said.

"Until July 2004, Latrobe City lagged behind municipalities that had already introduced initiatives. However, the favourable response by our community to the introduction of three-bin system led to an unprecedented upsurge in recycling in our municipality in the past year.

"When the 2004-2005 state figures are released, this upsurge in support for recycling in our municipality will be amply demonstrated. However, we cannot simply rest on our achievements of the past year. We need to look to the future and ways that we can become an even more resourceful community in diverting more of our waste to the recycling process," Cr Lougheed added.
