Council’s Community Development Coordinator, Bonnie Baird, said a session was held to raise awareness and understanding of Indigenous history and culture and to acknowledge the importance of this history to the Bass Coast Shire.

"Indigenous culture is an important part of Australia’s history.

"Council is committed through initiatives, such as these, that strengthen the community, especially isolated groups.

Wadawrurrung Elder and Community Development Officer, Byron Powell, who is employed in partnership with three other Councils, facilitated the NAIDOC celebrations.

NAIDOC celebrates the survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia.

The theme for NAIDOC week this year was ‘Our future begins with solidarity’.

NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia, not just in the Indigenous Community, but by an increasing number of government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces.

Ms Baird encouraged members of the community to find out more about the Indigenous history of Bass Coast Shire.

"Community members can contact Council on (03) 5671 2211 or (03) 5951 3311 or by contacting Shirley Gunson at the Bass Coast/South Gippsland Reconciliation Group on (03) 5674 2956.

"Alternatively community members with internet access can find out more about Indigenous issues by visiting www.naidoc.org.au or www.reconciliationaustralia.org," advised Ms Baird.
